The four days TEFL China training is coming to an end. In this nervous but fulfilling

program, I feel so grateful that I can learn much knowledge about how to be

a good teacher. By Alex’s guidance of the theory of

TEFL, experiencing the real teaching example and participating in

abundant activities. So I want to share some ideas as follow. In this session, I gain more beyond thinking. Now I would like to talk about what I learned in detais.

The first thing is that I know myself from a new perspective. Through the

learning, it makes me have a conversion. As a teacher who teach students

for Advance level, the rich knowledge is not only include pronunciation,grammar, syntax and so on but also means be very familiar with all kinds

of teaching methods. The method also encourage contexual learning. Additionally ,

we also have other four teaching methods in TEFL, such as TPR

Method, Graphic Method, Project Method and Direct Method. This

means total physical response. TPR approach which is based on listening

linked to physical activities is to reinforce comprehension. There are

many strengths by using this method to teach a second language, such as

less stress for students, easy to use. It is also helps students’ team

building and can be used ranging from young age to older people. It is a

easy way for students to learn language by using graphy. Students

through this teaching method can do a perfect brainstorming and

organizing their thoughts visually. It can be used in any type of the class.

The most prevalent used is KWL chart. But this type of chart is not the

only one we can used for teaching. This was called graphic method. Project Method means cooperation which gives students the chance to

work with their partners and seek some different points of view. Every

students can contribute their ideas about learning in order to finish the

tasks sucessfully. In this process, skills like problem-solving, critical

thinking will be used to a deep extent. The last one is called Direct

Method, this method refers to the teaching of language that can be

learned inductively. Students through this method can figure out the rules

for themselves. Only the target language is used in the direct method , so

they can make conversations, interactions, acting a lot. They are capable

of talking more and more , regardless of whether their talkings perfect or

not.

Besides, I also knew eight types learners in TEFL program. That is, Visual

Learners, Audio Learners, Physical learners, Logical Learners, Solitary

Learners, Verbal Learners, Social Learners and Combination Learners.

visual learners who prefer use their eyes to get information in their study

instead of detailed written or spoken information. Audio learners

means the people who study things more efficiently by listening. Using

songs to teach is the point. Physical learners, they prefer teachers to teach

them by physical interaction, so they can learn more and better. The

exercise we can choose for students is dancing or another movement by

their body. Verbal learners, who take advantage of words, so using the

wordplay can be a good way. Logical learners or we called analyticallearners, who find the patterns about what they learned. They love search

for the connections, reasons and results. The exercise we use to teach

them can be some materials requiring the problem-solving activities. And

Social learners. They would like to another people participating in their

study. When they can do the social interaction with others , they seem to

acquire more knowledge. Role-play for them is good. Solitary learners

who prefer to study by themselves, when studying alone, they can thrive.

Let them keep a person diary or something like that. Combination

learners--they may use two or three learning styles. So separate them in

groups, then make a dialogue by themselves and share out.

As a teacher, teaching method and knowledge skill are very important

without any doubt. Using how to use teaching aids to make our class have

more fun and can let the students become more concentrated in their

learning process. However, only to know these are not enough , we just

make some steps towards being a excellent teacher. So we also need to

learn more things , such as Pedagogy. Pedagogy is the discipline or

science that deal with the theory and practice of teaching. It can let

teachers to form teaching strategies, actions, judgements by taking into

account theories of learning, understanding of students needs, individual

backgrounds and interests. It enables people to be a good teacher and

have a good command of teaching students. So, in conclusion, in order to become a outstanding teacher, we need to

achieve: , the first stage is language development, then the second stage

is the most crucial stage, and it is more complicated because it involves

three sub-stages: learning, practice and reflection. Finally, the last stage is

professional competence, and it is also our goal.

These three aspects- ethic devotion, certain desirable personal styles and

necessary professional qualities constitute the professional competence of

a good language teacher.

Above all, I must say that I am pretty much appreciating TEFL study as

well as meeting a lot of preeminent teachers who has so abundant

knowledge that I can see them as a model.
